R. Hoe & Co. was the largest manufacturer of printing presses and press equipment in the United States during the 19th century. Its archives were dispersed in the 1970s, and later still, the letter books from which this collection derives were disassembled. Walter Scott & Company was organized in Plainfield, N.J., in 1884. The firm was a major manufacturer of printing presses, particulaly the large high-speed presses and folding machines used by newspapers. Walter Scott was born in Ayr, Scotland on May 22, 1844, and was educated at Ayr Academy.
